Holistic Design Trends of 2024

Holistic Interior Design is a trend itself, however, in my opinion it is well on its way to becoming a standard practice used in homes and commercial spaces.

Society is moving away from what we’re expected to do, buy, and accept, and moving into a new way of living. We want to know where our food is sourced from and what’s in it. We’re pushing back on the “pill for every ill”, and we want to know that we’re leaving the world a better place for our children. This, my friends, shouldn’t even be considered a trend. It should be considered a way of life. And that’s the platform I’m here to speak on, the messages I am meant to channel. So, without further ado, here are some of my favorite ways to incorporate a holistic perspective in the home.

Sustainability

Interestingly enough, one of my undergraduate degrees was actually environmentally sustainability. There was a point in my life where the ultimate goal was to work and write for National Geographic. In fact, I even interviewed for a position, and ultimately wasn’t offered the position. At the time I was heartbroken, of course, but now I see it was because I was meant to follow this path. To help people learn how to practice sustainability in their homes. To help people discover and live in conjunction with their home. To help people create their spiritual home.

Sustainability in the home is so much more than using an organic linen bedspread, although that is a great start. It’s about being intentional with your purchases, sourcing your home goods and construction materials with the environment in mind, and even practicing energetic work in the home. Refer back to your Holistic Home Checklist for certifications and materials to prioritize when it comes to sustainable sourcing. Want access to the Checklist? Sign up here.

My number one piece of advice for being mindful with your home goods is to avoid fast fashion and trends. Please think about the longevity of your items and the life cycle of them too. Where were they made and by who? How were they made and how far did they travel to get to you? How long until you’ve donated the item or put it in the landfill? It really comes down to being intentional about what you buy. Intentionality is trendy.

Biophilic Design

Think about yourself on vacation in Costa Rica… the home you’ve rented has an indoor/outdoor great room… you can hear the birds chirping outside…you can smell the fresh air… this is biophilic design. It’s bringing the outside in.

This connection to nature is inherently crucial to our wellbeing, giving us a sense of peace, grounding, relaxation, and even circadian energy. It’s a common way of life in many other countries, in fact, unlike what most of us have grown accustomed to.

If you want to bring more of this design style into your life, the easiest place to start is by adding plants. Real plants are a wonderful Feng Shui adjustment, bringing life force energy into the home and even naturally purifying the air you breathe. Using earth tones, natural materials, and organic textures is another way to incorporate this style into your home.

Lighting Design

The other primary trend that I touched on above is related to your circadian rhythm – consider your lighting. Bright, harsh, white light at the end of the day is an easy way to mess with your circadian rhythm. Think about how you would help your baby adjust to its new way of life. You wouldn’t stick it in a dark room when it was supposed to be awake, and a bright room when it was meant to sleep. It’s really that simple. Your wellbeing is just as important as your baby’s, and rest is a crucial piece to the puzzle.

My number one tip for lighting is to consider the time of day and the task at hand. Use bright, overhead lighting for spaces like the kitchen where you’re cooking and completing important tasks. Save soft, ambient light for bedrooms and restful living rooms. Place accent lights over areas that require more visibility – like reading chairs or pianos. And, open the blinds in the morning to bring in fresh, natural light.
